While invasive species are nothing new to the residents and sportsman of the Great Lakes, a new threat to the Lakes' ecosystem has emerged. And it's a scaly one. Well, it's only creature, but researchers are speculating that there could be more.
Sightings a massive alligator have occurred in Lake Michigan over the past few weeks, of an unidentified species resembling a large Caiman. Witnesses say the reptile measures upwards of 6 meters (19 feet) in length, with hooked claws and large serrated teeth. It has been described with black scales and brown rings around it's eyes, as well as running down it's back.
Theories on where the reptiles came from has been the subject of heated debate. While researchers are puzzled over the creature, others believe they have a more magical explanation for the creature. Cryptozoologists are theorizing that it's some sort of yet-unseen species, while an occult group has proclaimed it an otherworldy monster. Due to a lack of supernatural phenomena surrounding the sightings, the latter claim has been summarily dismissed by the scientific community.
Zoologist Henward Munch, graduate from Michigan State University, renowned reptile enthusiastic and author of Tipping The Scales: Preserving Reptiles In The Modern Age, has spoken on the idea of searching for the creature himself: "I'd really like to get a look at this thing. It's not every day that a new kind of alligator just appears out of the blue."
